George Carlin Dies of Heart Failure

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy,

George CarlinGeorge Carlin, the very first host of , died Sunday evening of heart failure. The 71-year-old was admitted into a Santa Monica hospital earlier that day after complaining of chest pains.

Although he had racked up 14 HBO specials and more than 130 appearances on , the comedian was probably best known for his monologue on a 1972 album. His list of the ‘Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television’ eventually led to several arrests and a Supreme Court case. (Those words - which were ruled indecent - still cannot be said on air today.)

You can see the Today show’s tribute to the legendary stand-up comic after the jump.

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Late Night, Talk Shows, ABC, NBC,

Jay Leno, Jimmy KimmelAlthough they are technically competitors, the inconvenient has given and something in common to gripe about: the struggle to land a guest.  And since misery loves company, they have decided to set aside network differences to help each other out.

Usually one has to wait for a sweeps period to see a special crossover appearance.  In this case, we only had to wait several weeks into January…and we get two in one night.

So if you really need your Kimmel fix, catch him as a guest on this evening before flipping channels to see him as host.  (The same remote instructions apply to Leno lovers as well.)  Or you could simply stick to scripted fare and stay on all night long.

More Vanessa Hudgens Photos Released

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Late Night, Music, Cable, NBC, Gossip,

Vanessa HudgensAs we reported earlier, canceled a scheduled appearance on The Tonight Show yesterday.  While it was safe to assume she was still embarrassed about her infamous nudie pic, it turns out she may have been reacting to another round of photos altogether.

Former friends everywhere have been opening up their shoeboxes and sharing their favorite stills of the star.  The latest ones released yesterday, reminiscent of the racy photos took with , at least have her fully clothed this time.  One photo shows Vanessa almost connecting tongues with another girlfriend while a second apparently shows her touching a friend’s breast.

We can only hope was apprised of all her photos before they issued their (weak) statement of support; I don’t imagine they will stop coming out of the woodwork anytime soon.

Vanessa Hudgens Bails on Leno

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Late Night, Talk Shows, NBC, Gossip, Rumors,

Vanessa Hudgens You had to figure it would take a little time for seemingly wholesome to make an interview appearance after the recent nudie pic that was circulating online. She was scheduled to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight, but has bagged the appearance. Of course, there’s no reason cited for the cancelled gig and no comment from her rep, but we can all pretty much connect the dots, don’tcha think? Apparently, she’s not ready to face the music and come clean to Leno. Maybe Ellen or the ladies of The View would make the subject a little bit easier to approach? Not like Leno will go for the jugular or anything, but obviously some questions need to be asked given the recent scandal. Huh. Makes you wonder if Rob Schneider, who filled in when Lindsay Lohan bailed on her Leno appearance, will show up doing his best Hudgens impression.

Jimmy Fallon Conan O’Brien, who is reportedly moving to The Tonight Show, has got to pass the late night baton on to someone. Why not , SNL alum? Show execs say that Fallon is at the top of the short list of candidates to replace O’Brien, though the official announcement won’t be made until 2008. , Fallon’s former Weekend Update co-host, says she thinks Fallon will be great for the gig. There is a possibility that NBC will hold onto Leno, however, as he’s still pulling in a big chunk of ratings for the struggling network. If they do keep Leno, the network will have to pay O’Brien $45 million – a hefty sum indeed for the network that’s currently in fourth place in the network ratings game. Allegedly, NBC also talked to to entice him away from Comedy Central, but Stewart did not seem very keen on the idea of leaving his cushy cable job. Earlier this year, Stewart was nominated for an Emmy for his funny, edgy political satire show.
